Venti domande a Pasquale Culotta : un’intervista immaginaria

2010

In Culotta’s teaching, and also in his profession, the ancient city has always represented the architectural text par excellence, one of the most important tools for the education of the architect, from which to continuously draw materials to transform in his own interpretation of the project. This should also be true for the historic center of Palermo, despite the many issues you have presented to us. Do the unresolved aspects of the ancient city prevent us from finding more or less spontaneous seeds of renewal, even in these conditions of great hardship, or does it still represent a source of wealth, difficult to read but legible, for the architectural designer? In the Design Laboratory w…

Comunicare l'esperienza del progetto

2010

Overall, the features dedicated to the publication of the creations of more or less young Sicilian designers are those that give the journal the most original and authentic character, promoting the activity of a generation of architects who over the years come to identify themselves in terms of similar design intentions and common objectives. The publication in «In Architettura» of many buildings in the Sicilian territory, even small houses, makes up the repertoire and contributes to the creation of a group, of a school. Together with the “Esercizi” column, the section called “Esperienza della progettazione” represents one of the main components of the journal which is entrusted with the mo…

«Nolite extollere in altum cornu vestrum». Ipotesi sul campanile della chiesa della Santissima Annunziata di Messina

2022

This article addresses a series of hypothesis concerning the octagonal space indicated in Guarino Guarini’s drawings of the Church of the Santissima Annunziata in Messina in his Architettura Civile. The façade of the church was completed around 1660 by Guarino Guarini and presented a «prodigiously high» bell tower at the corner, which collapsed during the 1693 earthquake and was later rebuilt shorter. The entire church was destroyed during the 1908 earthquake. Guarini’s drawings published in his treatise suggest that there must have been an octagonal chapel with columns at the corners under the tower; perhaps it was the baptistery of the church. Alternatively, the octagon can be identified …

«In Architettura. Il giornale della progettazione» was founded by Pasquale Culotta in Cefalù in 1979, together with a group of young architects. For several years the magazine has been a valuable tool for debate on the profession and teaching of architecture. With this publication, a sort of special issue, we intend to pay homage to Culotta. Retracing some of the most important stages of his activity, from the project for the new headquarters of the Faculty of Architecture in Palermo to the competition for the church of San Carlo Borromeo in Rome, through the memory and contribution of those who had the opportunity to work and study with him , the portrait of a professional is drawn, who ha…

I servizi speciali di «In Architettura»

2010

In the great multi-voiced conversation on architecture, Culotta asks himself: «What is the city? - and he continues - The city is the place of representation of the social form» of the community. The text is a profound reflection on the social role of the architect, on his public responsibility, torn between the awareness of the need for the standard as a "reference material" in the technical space of production and the cultivation of the intimate part of the designer where creation takes place , as an artistic discipline, and where uncomfortable truths also emerge, such as the recognition of a real ability to intervene, understood as sensitivity to the complexity of the architectural quest…
